What is Tompkins knit fabric? Similarly to loopwheel fabric that we commonly feature in the shop, Tompkins Upright Rotary Knitting Machines are also tube knit, and once used in American manufacturing, but later replaced for more efficient machines. They both use bearded spring needles and knit slowly and continuously resulting in a density airy fabric. However, Loopwheel machines knit from the top and hang the fabric, but Tompkins machines knit from the bottom up draping the fabric over rollers, an even slower process. Devise Factory carefully developed their fabric over 20 years to their exact specifications until they developed a knit that was dense but airy, slubby and dry on the skin, but incredibly stretchy and comfortable.
